Glare at the mesmerizing view of Mount Merapi and Merbabu. Situated on the rural side of the city. Ketep Pass is not too far from Borobudur Temple. This popular destination offers educational tourism activities. It also features a dramatic sunrise view and the marvelous landscape from 1200 meters hill.

From the highest point of Ketep Pass, Panca Arga yard. Guests can see the five mountains. Just sound like its name, Panca means five and Arga means mountain. Panca Arga symbolizes the number of the mountain. From mount Merapi, Merbabu, Sumbing, Sindoro, and Slamet.

To get a clear view of a mountain landscape. Binoculars are provided for visitors in the Gardu Pandang deck. Next to the Panca Arga. After reveling in the exotic panorama. Set on the upper floor of Ketep Volcano Theater. Tourists can enjoy various cuisine with a magnificent view of Mount Merapi and Merbabu.

Ketep Pass Entrance Fee

There is two entrance fee price for international tourists. From Monday to Sunday, the entrance ticket is Rp50,000. While Sundays and national holiday tickets cost Rp60,000. The entrance fee doesn’t include the theater ticket. There is an additional price to watch the documentary in Volcano Theater and a binocular rental.

Ketep Pass Opening Hours

The hill where Ketep Pass is located is only 30 km from Borobudur Temple, Punthuk Setumbu, and Chicken Church. Local tourists mostly visit and list Ketep Pass with other attractions on one visit. To get a clear view of the 5 mountains come here during the dry season. The best month to visit the highland is from June to August. Wear warm clothes and bring a jacket as the weather can be unpredictable sometimes. On the weekend and holidays, Ketep Pass is crowded with local tourists.

Ketep Pass Top Activities

Surrounded by a green area and spectacular mountain scenery. And nonpolluted air is the most reason why people keep coming here. The sunrise experience is different from other places. On a sunny day, visitors can see the splendiferous dawn in the middle of Mount Merapi and Merbabu.

The best spot to catch the sunrise is from the Panca Arga yard. A photography enthusiast will be thrilled by the sensational ridge view. Snap the impressive sunrise and capture the life of the locals living on the slope of the mountain.

Observation Deck

Observe and get a better view from the Observation Deck. There are 2 binoculars placed both in Panca Arga and Gardu Pandang yards. See the contour and pattern of vegetation that covers the 5 mountains. Guests can see not only the five mountains around Ketep Pass, but the hill surrounding it, Tidar, Andong, Pring, Menoreh, and Telomoyo hills.

The green fields around the neighborhood and the locals growing vegetables in front of their yards. It’s one of the features of this site. There are binoculars for rent on the premises. The locals living next to the area mostly offer it for Rp10.000 for 20 minutes of use.

Volcano Center

Ketep Pass not only offers a beautiful landscape, but here tourists could learn more about mountains in Indonesia, especially the volcano. Don’t miss the museum and volcano theater. The volcano learning center in Ketep Pass is a good way to learn more about Mount Merapi.

The volcano center displays a miniature of Mount Merapi, the most active volcano mountain in Indonesia. Merapi is known worldwide for its explosion impact back in 2010. Here, visitors will get to see a piece of rocks from the eruption and documentation of Mount Merapi Peak. Photos of cold lava flood as well as the documentation of Mount Merapi’s eruption from year to year.

Don’t miss to try the stereoscope to see the documentation taken from above in 3D format. There is no additional charge for visitors to visit this museum. After exploring the museum, watch the documentary film at Volcano Theatre. With a small capacity, the theater can only cater to 78 audiences in each session.

Last, watch the documentary movie in the theater with an additional ticket of Rp9,000. The movie is about Mount Merapi’s volcano and what happened during the eruption. The duration of the film is 25 minutes. And the movie will begin with 15 audiences.

Facilities

Craving for some food after exploring the entire area. Sit back and order delightful Indonesian cuisine in the restaurant around the premises. Located on the second floor of Ketep Volcano Theater. The wall glass in the restaurant offers a spectacular view of Mount Merapi and Merbabu.

Ketep Resto serves various cuisine from the Indonesian traditional menu and Chinese food. With the range for food and beverage starting from Rp4,000 to Rp55,000. There are some street food stalls also around the area that mainly serve Indonesian snacks. Try the most favorite street food in Ketep Pass, roasted corn. The dish will cost not more than Rp10,000 for the snack.

How To Get To Ketep Pass

This tourist spot is located 50 km from the center of Yogyakarta an hour’s drive. To get here, people will have to go on a bus from the bus terminal in Yogyakarta. Find a microbus that going to Semarang or Magelang. Tell the driver to stop at the junction of the Blabak area. From Blabak, find another microbus that is headed to Ketep Pass.
