Ullen Sentalu Museum initially builds to preserve the Javanese intangible heritage. From painting, literature, and a face mask to the literature of the Javanese monarch. Ullen Sentalu Museum was built in 1997 on the slopes of Merapi Mountain.

Ullen Sentalu Museum Opening Hour

Ullen Sentalu Museum opens from Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Monday. The ticket counter will close 30 minutes before the museum closing time. The last guided tour is at 15:15.

The Javanese Culture in Ullen Sentalu Museum

Ullen Sentalu’s name has a philosophical meaning. In a Javanese acronym, “ULating LENcong SEjatiNE TAtaraning LUmaku”. Blencong is a lamp that is used for wayang kulit performance. Lamp symbolizes the light. So, Ullen Sentalu means the light as the guide for the life of human beings.

The museum building has a European Gothic character, with a mix of Javanese styles ornaments. The museum is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and is located in Yogyakarta Highland, Kaliurang. Ullen Sentalu Museum has several areas and buildings. The museum seems like a labyrinth with a narrow and curved down to the hallways.

The labyrinth in the Ullen Sentalu Museum symbolizes life. A life that is not always going straight as planned but sometimes upside down. The construction of the buildings leans on the contour of the hills. There are a pond and a beautiful green lush garden. And an open theatre with a magnificent stone pillar and lotus pond. There is also one underground building inside.

Ullen Sentalu Museum Collection

The front buildings function as a living hall. It’s where all visitors will get full information about the museum. The statue of Dewi Sri Goddess is the favorite spot and always attract a visitor. In the Javanese culture, the goddess is a symbol of fertility.

Gamelan Exhibition & Sela Giri Cave

The exhibition displays paintings of Javanese dance and gamelan instruments. One of the Gamelan is taken from Yogyakarta Royal Palace. The same instrument has been played in many traditional performances and dances in the royal palace.

Sela Giri cave is the only underground building in the museum. Beneath the underground, there is an old well called Gumuling Taman. It has a gothic theme just like the building architecture. The construction of the old well uses material from Mount Merapi. In Sela Giri cave, visitors can see paintings of the important figures that represent the four palaces in the Mataram dynasty.

Bilik Syair Tineke Room

The room displays a collection of poetry written by the Princess and the daughter of Sunan Pakubuwana XI Surakarta. GRAj Koes Sapariyam or called as Tineke. This poetry has been kept in Surakarta Palace. The compilation of the princess’s work is written between 1939 to 1947. This finding shows literature in Java existed long enough.

Ratu Mas Royal Room

The room displays the collection of Ratu Mas. The Queen of Sunan Pakubuwana X. The collection of the Queen is her dress “dodot”. The traditional wedding dress in Java. Batik, accessories, and the painting made by the Queen.

Batik Room

The Vorstendlanden Room is a collection of Surakarta and Yogyakarta batik. This batik is a private piece collection of Sultan Hamengkubuwono and Sunan Pakubuwana.

The motive in a batik piece is not only art but also has a deep philosophical meaning. In the Pesisiran room, guests will get a chance to see batik from Pekalongan and various equipment used for making batik.

Putri Dambaan Room

The room displays the collection and biography of the princess. The daughter of Mangkunegaran VII and Queen GKR Timur. The life and culture in the palace and detail of her life from 1921 to 1951.

Retja Landa & Sasana Sekar Bawana

The corridor of Retja Landa and Sasana Sekar Bawana is located outdoors. In the corridor, guests can see the statue of Hindu and Buddha Gods from the 8th century. Meanwhile, at the Sasana there’s a paintings collection of Mataram King.

Museum Visit Guideline

The museum does not allow a visitor to bring a backpack or travel bag. Bring a small or medium bag. During the tour, the guest is not allowed to touch, take a picture or record a video. Taking a picture is only allowed in some areas.

How To Get To Ullen Sentalu Museum

Ullen Sentalu Museum is located in the Kaliurang tourism area. From the center of Yogyakarta, visitors can catch Transjogja Bus line 2B or 3B to North Ring Road Shelter, Kentungan. Hop into an Elf minibus to Kaliurang. Stop at Kaliurang Kindergarten and walk for 300 meters. It will be an 8-minute walk to get to Ullen Sentalu Museum from the kindergarten.
