Punthuk Setumbu is a hill with a height of about 400 meters and is located in Menoreh Mountain. Before becoming a tourist destination, Punthuk Setumbu once was a farm field maintained by the locals. The location of the hill is a bit away from Yogyakarta.

International visitors will have to pay more than the locals Rp50,000 to explore the area. The entrance fee doesn’t include the parking ticket for a private car or scooter. There is no additional charge for camping on this site.

Punthuk Setumbu Opening Hours

Punthuk Setumbu is open every day. On a weekday the entrance counter will open from 4 AM in the morning to 5 PM. But on weekends and public holidays, Punthuk Setumbu entrance counter is open all day long. The best time to visit Punthuk Setumbu Hill is during the dry season. Visitors will get the best chance of clear sky and wide visibility. Be there before 05:00 in the morning to get a better spot for enjoying the sunrise.

Attraction Spot in Punthuk Setumbu

Punthuk Setumbu Hill is literally the slope of Menoreh Mountain. The other elevation post called Cething, Cemuris, and Setompo is close to each other. Even there are 3 other hills in the same area. Punthuk Setumbu is the most visited and favorite place for tourists among the others. From the entrance and parking area, visitors will have to climb up the paved stair. It takes 10-20 minutes from the entrance gate to the sunrise observation deck.

Renowned as the best place to watch Nirvana Sunrise. Punthuk Hill is usually packed with visitors from 4 AM tagging the best spot. The top of Borobudur Temple is seen in the distance. But most of the people rush to come here to watch the sunrise with a Mountain background and the paddy field landscape. There is a spot on Punthuk Hill with a 360-degree view, the love sign spot. And the most favorite queue is the swinging spot.

Camping Ground

There is an area provided for guests to spend a night and build a tent. Most of the camper will come in the afternoon. Build a tent and get to see the city light and sleep under the sky. Here, guests can enjoy the sparkling night view of Magelang City from the hills. There is also a small guest house around the hill area for a short sunrise layover.

There is no additional charge for camping activities on Punthuk Hill. However, at the entrance, make sure to register. Guests should try the treehouse too. Made of wood and hanging from a tree, the house offers a sensation of different living spaces. With a wide unlimited view sets in a quiet area.

What To Prepare

From the entrance gate, visitors will have to hike to get to the top. Wear comfortable shoes for trekking or mountain sandal. Bring a sweater and a headlamp. There is a small stall at the entrance selling food. Make sure to pack up some snacks and water.

Some of the local people are also working as a guide in Punthuk Setumbu. Take the guide as the locals will pass on a good insight; a story of Punthuk Setumbu. Some local guides will offer a short unbeaten path to Chicken Church. The guide service is also flexible, visitors can negotiate and combine the package to Borobudur temple. The cost for a guide service starts from Rp150.000.- to do 3 places.

Guests can also relax in a gazebo. There are the locals’ traditional houses around the area. And some of the locals rent their homes to tourists.

How To Get To Punthuk Setumbu

The hill is located 44 km away or an hour’s drive from Yogyakarta. From the center of Magelang, it takes half an hour and only 10 minutes from Borobudur Temple. To get here from the downtown of Yogyakarta.

Hop on Line 3 A Transjogja Bus from Adisucipto International Airport. Change into another line 2A at Condongcatur Shelter to Jombor bus station. From Jombor Bus station catch a small bus that passes the Borobudur terminal.

The small bus will cost Rp30.000,-. Use the taxi-bike to reach Punthuk Setumbu. Cost for the taxi-bike range from Rp30.000.- to Rp50.000,- depending on the bargaining skill. The bus route is not an option for an early morning trip. Since the bus starts operating at 05:30 am.
